Everything you might want to know about how Spru works, and why your avatar has feelings about your lunch.
Getting Started
What is Spru?
Spru is a nutrition app built around a small creature that depends on you. It's a plant based avatar that reacts to what you eat, how much you drink, and how consistent you are. Log a meal and you'll see it show up on Spru's face, not just in a chart.
How do I sign in or create an account?
You can sign in with a passwordless email link, or with Apple or Google. No password to remember.
Can I try Spru without an account?
Yes. Guest mode gives you 72 hours to explore Spru with no account required. Your meals are saved the whole time, and if you decide to create an account afterward, everything you logged comes with you.
What phone do I need to run Spru?
Spru runs on iOS 16 or later, and on Android devices running Android 8.0 (SDK 26) or later.
Your Avatar
Why does my avatar's mood change?
Spru's mood updates in real time based on your recent meals and your hydration. Eat well and drink enough water, and it shows. Skip a few meals or let hydration slip, and Spru notices that too.
What do the five moods mean?
Glowing means your last meal scored high and hydration is good. Healthy and Okay sit in the middle. Sleepy shows up when your recent scores dip. Wilted means hydration has dropped below 20%, or your last meal scored very low.
How does my avatar grow, and what are the 8 stages?
Spru grows through 8 stages, from Seed to Mastery, as you earn XP: Seed, Sprout, Sapling, Young, Mature, Flourishing, Thriving, and Mastery. Each stage needs more XP than the last. Mastery, the final stage, is reserved for Grow subscribers. Reaching a new stage triggers a little celebration on screen.
How do I earn XP?
Mostly by logging. A meal earns 40 XP plus a bonus for how healthy it was. Logging water earns 15 XP, a mood check in earns 20, and hitting your daily water goal earns 35. Log three or more meal types in a day for a 60 XP bonus, and keep a streak going for extra XP on top of that.
Logging Meals & Scoring
What are the different ways to log a meal?
Three ways, and they all feed the same scoring engine. Take a photo, describe your meal in your own words, or search a food database and add it directly.
How does AI photo logging work?
Take a photo, or pick one from your gallery. Spru identifies what's on your plate and estimates the portions, then shows you each ingredient so you can adjust anything before it's scored. Editing an ingredient updates your score right away, no need to resubmit.
How is my meal score calculated?
Spru looks up real nutrition data for what you ate, rather than guessing from a photo, and scores it using the Nutri-Score system. It weighs things like sugar, saturated fat, and sodium against fibre, protein, and fruit or veg content. Heavily processed meals get an extra penalty. Meals score Healthy at 67 or above, Neutral from 34 to 66, and Unhealthy below that.
Can I fix or edit a meal after logging it?
Yes. You can remove or adjust ingredients right after logging, and your score updates immediately.
Tracking Your Progress
How does water tracking work?
Tap to log 250ml at a time, working toward a daily goal of 2,000ml. Hitting your goal triggers a small celebration, and your hydration feeds directly into Spru's mood.
What does the Energy battery mean?
It's a battery that reflects your energy through the day. It starts at 55% when you wake up and decays over time, and meals recharge it based on how healthy they were and how much they contained. Eating at reasonable times matters here, not just eating enough.
What's the difference between Wellbeing and today's score?
Wellbeing is a rolling 7 day average, so it shows your trend rather than a single day. One bad day won't tank it, and over time it factors in your mood check ins alongside your food quality.
What is a streak, and what are the reminder nudges?
A streak day is any day you log at least one meal. If you haven't logged anything by the evening, you might get a gentle nudge. After two or more days without logging, Spru sends one reminder that it's been a while.
What is the daily mood check-in for?
It's a quick five point scale, once a day, asking how you're feeling. It feeds into your Wellbeing score and earns you 20 XP.
Subscription & Billing
What's the difference between Free and Grow?
Free gives you 3 days of meal history and avatar stages 1 through 7. Grow, at £5.99 a month, unlocks unlimited meal history, Spru's final growth stage, and full insights.
Why did I hit a paywall after a few days?
Free accounts can view 3 days of meal history. On day 4, you'll see a paywall to keep going. It's not a bug, it's just where the free plan ends.
How do I manage or cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are handled through your Apple App Store or Google Play account settings, since that's where the purchase happened. You can cancel any time, and it stays active until the end of your current billing period.
Referrals
How does the referral program work?
Every user gets a unique referral code. Share it, and anyone who signs up through your link gets it applied automatically.
What do I get for referring a friend?
When someone you referred makes their first paid purchase, you get a month of Grow for free.
Where do I find my referral code?
Look under Settings, then Invite. You can share it straight from there with your phone's share sheet.
Privacy & Your Data
What happens to my data?
Your meal and photo data is used to run Spru: scoring your food, updating your avatar, and showing your progress. Photos are uploaded directly and securely, and never shared or sold.
How do I delete my account?
You can delete your account from Settings. It removes your photos, your data, and your account entirely. This can't be undone, so make sure you're ready.
